I can see the icon and its active while its locted in hidden icons area. But, if I move it to the system tray it dissapears. The space for it is there and if I hover over it I see the info box. I can move it back to the hidden icons and I see it just fine. I suspected the black background on my status bar was the issue. The icon is a black cartoon thing and simply blends in. So moved an an open notepad window down behind the task bar, aereo lightens the task bar background and then I can see the icon. But I don't see any way in the settings to change the icon color to something that would be visible normally.

On the Settings > Status Indicators tab, there's an "Icon Theme" drop-down. If you set that to "Light" and then click OK on the settings window, that should do the trick :)
